چکیده

pray-dried (SD) lactose was introduced to the pharmaceutical market in the 1960s as an excipient that enables direct compression of formulations in a simple manufacturing process (1). To this day, lactose remains one of the most popular excipients for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) whose dose makes them suitable for direct compression. Several manufacturers make and sell SD lactose, and a pharmaceutical formulator must understand the variables that control performance to select the right grade for an application. This article begins with a description of the structure of SD lactose, followed by a review of the variables that can affect its compressibility, and concludes with a look at a possible next-generation product.

PARTIAL CRYSTALLISATION OF LACTOSE IN SPRAY DRYING WAN NUR’AIN NABILA BINTI WAN NAIN A report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Bioprocess)

The purpose of this study was to determine the lactose behaviour during partial crystallisation in spray drying. Spray-dried lactose has been widely used in pharmaceutical industries as excipient for dry powder inhalation drugs. Partial crystals of lactose were produced by spray-dried lactose solutions at different operating condition of inlet temperature, feed flow rate and sample concentratio...

Effects of replacing milk and soybean products with wheat glutens on digestibility of nutrients and growth performance in nursery pigs.

Three experiments were conducted to determine the nutritional value of wheat gluten (WG) for weanling pigs. In Exp. 1, 72 pigs (4.2 kg average BW) were used in a N metabolism experiment. Treatments were 1) casein-corn-based control; 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) Diet 1 with flash-dried WG, spray-dried WG, two enzyme-modified (to increase solubility) WG, and soybean meal (SBM) used to replace casein, respe...

Effect of Humidity on in-Process Crystallization of Lactose during Spray Drying

The effect of various humidities on process yields and degrees of crystallinity for spray-dried powders from spray drying of lactose with humid air in a straight-through system have been studied. It has been suggested by Williams–Landel–Ferry kinetics (WLF) that a higher particle temperature and lower glass-transition temperature would increase the crystallization rate of the particles during t...

Effect of Lactose and Protein on the Microstructure of Dried Milk

Skim milk of approximately 3% total protein was ultrafiltered to 16.2% protein and 4.1 % lactose, and then diafiltered to reduce lactose to 2.1% and 0.9%. Total protein con ten t was maintained at approximately 17%. A ponion of the sk im milk was condensed in a rising film evaporator to 14.7% protein and 15.7 % lactose . All concentrates were spray dried at 120 to 125 °C inlet air temperature a...

A study of micronized poloxamers as lubricants in direct compression of tablets.

The study evaluates the micronized poloxamers Lptrol micro127 (poloxamer 407) and Lptrol micro 68 (poloxamer 188) as lubricants in combination with the dry binders microcrystalline cellulose and spray-dried lactose. Magnesium stearate was employed as the comparative lubricant. The parameters under study included energy for friction, plasticity, ejection force, tensile strength of tablets, and d...

Temperature-induced crystallization and compactibility of spray dried composite particles composed of amorphous lactose and various types of water-soluble polymer.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the temperature-induced crystallization and the compactibility of the composite particles containing amorphous lactose and various types of polymers. The composite particles were prepared by spray-drying an aqueous solution of lactose and various types of gel forming water-soluble polymers at various formulating ratios. The stabilizing effect of hydr...
